Modern air conditioning systems are incredibly reliable. If you have a system that was produced within the last few years, you are enjoying a technology that efficiently cools your home without using any more energy than is necessary. It’s never been so easy to keep an indoor space at a comfortable temperature, even during the middle of a scorching Texas summer.
With all of that said, even the best equipment is not perfect. Some common AC problems can come up from time to time with air conditioning, and it can be helpful to have some idea of what those issues might be. No matter what the problem is, be sure to call Walker Air • Plumbing • Electric right away when problems come up. Our experienced and friendly professionals will get right to work on correcting the issue, so the cold air can flow once again.
#1 – Won’t Turn On
In some cases, your air conditioner simply won’t turn on. It looks like everything is set for it to run, but nothing is happening. Unfortunately, there are many possible causes for this issue, and some of those are going to require professional help. One thing you can do is to check the circuit that controls the power going to your air conditioner. If the circuit is tripped, resetting it may be all that is needed to get up and running once again. Beyond that, it’s probably best to call in Walker to look over the system and determine what has gone wrong.
#2 – Keeps Running Endlessly
This is basically the opposite of the problem listed above. In this case, the AC comes on – but it doesn’t turn off when it should. If you notice that your AC just keeps running and running, you should be alerted to the fact that something is almost certainly wrong. You might get it to stop by adjusting the settings on your thermostat. If not, reach out to a pro for help.
#3 – Air Not Cool Enough
The whole point of using energy to run an air conditioner is to cool off your home. If that will not happen, you might as well turn off the unit. When you notice that warm air is coming out of your vents, something has gone wrong, such as low refrigerant levels or an overheated compressor.
#4 – Short Cycling
You can probably guess from the name what this problem is all about. Instead of running for a reasonable amount of time before shutting off, the air conditioner keeps going through short cycles. This is a problem because the wear and tear that occurs when the system starts up and shuts down can strain the equipment. Sometimes, you can get away from the short cycling issue by changing the settings on your thermostat, or you might solve it by changing to a fresh air filter.
#5 – Outdoor Unit Freezing Up
It’s quite a startling sight to see your outdoor air conditioning unit with ice buildup on the coils during the middle of a hot summer day. However, this is a relatively common occurrence and one that can pop up for a variety of reasons. Some of the potential causes of AC unit freezing include low levels of refrigerant, issues with the blower motor, and poor airflow over the coils.
#6 – Strange Noises
If you have been living in your home with the air conditioner for some time, you already know what kinds of noises it usually makes. Air conditioners aren’t silent, of course, but their noises are relatively predictable and consistent. When something changes – a new noise that the system hasn’t made before – could be a sign of trouble. Even if it still seems to work okay for the moment, consider bringing in an expert to look at what could cause that sound.
#7 – Breaker Keeps Tripping
Your air conditioner might occasionally trip the breaker that it uses – and that isn’t necessarily any cause for concern. However, if the breaker keeps tripping over and over again, and for no apparent reason, you’ll want to have the matter addressed. Fixing this problem will save you the frustration of continually having to reset the breaker, and it will also allow you to explore whether there is a bigger issue to fix.
